Ilyas Phaizulline
Painting Edip before the
Sphynx ( Oil on canvas, 100x80 cm). In the Greek
mythology Sphynx (half-woman and half-lioness), lived on a rock near Thebes;
set to passers-by a unsoluble riddle and then, not having received the answer,
devoured them. A riddle has solved Edip (the future tsar of Thebes) then the
Sphynx has rushed from a rock. The pictures of Ilyas Phaizulline are allegorical.
It is not necessary to search in his works the action of concrete events (exception
- historical). In the painting the Egyptian statue of the Sphynx with a beaten
off nose (the nose has been beaten off by arabs, soldiers of Napoleon have
completed this barbarous business, shotting her with their guns. In front
of the statue - the future tsar of Thebes Edip who has guessed a riddle. In
the cave it's visible the tomb of pharaon Ramzesa. The sphynx in the imagination
of the artist is a universal symbol of power, titanic beauty, a symbol of
eternity (an inscription on a stone hieroglyphs "Eternity"), and the person
on this background fragile and defenceless. Ilyas Phaizulline,
painter of the Tatarstan Republic (Russia), was born in Tetyushi
city on Volga in 1950. In 1970 Ilyas Phaizulline ended a musical-art-pedagogical
secondary school in Leninigorsk and started to work in a painting, sculpture
and architecture Institute, in St. Petersburg. Ilyas painter
and draftsman, has been living and working in Kazan city, the capital of the
Tatarstan Republic, from 2001. Actually he's also member of the Artists' Union
of Russia and Tatarstan. Ilyas is a master painter of the mystical realism,
and always he focuses his attention on subjects such as Ancient Greece, mythology
and the history of the Tatar People.
